What is a stress test?

A stress test or exercise test is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the effects of exercise on the heart. The patient is monitored to obtain a record of his cardiac activity, usually walking on a treadmill or pedaling an exercise bike. This test is done on an outpatient basis in a medical facility. The test is used to evaluate situations such as angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarctions, heart rhythm disturbances that appear during exercise, etc.
